Five ways to build consistency at work

Consistency is one of the most integral keys to success. Along with discipline, this quality can boost one’s career farther than one can ever imagine. However, developing consistency requires years of correct practice and an unwavering commitment. Life coach Marc Accetta shares in this blog post fives ways to become consistent at work.

Have a consistent morning. Getting out of bed at the same hour each morning and doing the same routine of making breakfast and coffee or breaking a sweat before taking a bite helps get one to a focused state. Take note: consistency is also about routine.

Follow a consistent thinking. For one to practice consistent behavior, it’s imperative they subscribe to consistent principles. Meditate every day and ensure the mind is in a healthy state to enjoy consistency. A person is likely to be a constant force at work if they are consistent in their personal life.

Do things even if they don’t please you
. At the end of the day, one will always be pleased with what they accomplished, no matter how hard it took to complete them.

Focus on improvement. Developing consistency takes discipline, and discipline takes hard work. One should avoid putting too much pressure on themselves, rather acknowledge the progress they’re making no matter how small these may be.

Fight the feeling of laziness. The body can fool the brain into thinking one deserves a long break after completing a short task. Be objective and learn to fight emotions. Push through these feelings to avoid getting stuck, shares Marc Accetta.

More ways managers can positively connect to the team

Marc Accetta has extensive experience and expertise helping people reach their potential. Over the past few years, he has gone a step further and shared his knowledge to people everywhere through his series of blogs.

In this blog post, Marc Accetta explores more ways on how managers can positively connect to the rest of their teams.

Lend a helping hand. It’s a huge deal for many employees, especially new ones if they know a manager has their back. Assuring the team of assistance when needed is a huge confidence booster. However, Marc Accetta cautions managers to be mindful with the amount of help they can offer. Sometimes, offering too much may cause dependency, which is counterproductive.

Choose good words. When conversing with subordinates, what a manager says is as important as anything else. They must remember that not everyone thinks like they do, and what may be harmless to them might be offensive to people. Managers should practice using positive words, even when providing feedback.

Learn about interests. When a manager moves around an office, sometimes, it’s easy to see what their subordinates love to do during their personal time. Whether it’s going to the gym, hiking, reading books, watching films, knowing all of this allows for a more personal connection between a manager and his subordinates. More importantly, it shows the team that their leader genuinely cares enough to learn about what everyone likes.

Seven ways to help you become an excellent employee

Companies desire to work with individuals who are resilient, innovative, creative, and dedicated to their craft. Many employees lose motivation when challenges arise. Often this is due to their lack of confidence in the job, or plain unenthusiastic about what they do.

One key step to becoming an excellent employee is to capture the vision of the company. Working with and for a company that shares the same vision and values can make the job natural and worthwhile. Show up for the team. Being a team player helps one learn better and work more effectively with colleagues. Marc Accetta says it’s important for an employee to get to know their leaders and teammates. Connecting with colleagues outside of work helps in cultivating positive relationships in the workplace.

Maintain a positive attitude in the workplace makes employees likable. Instead of walking around with a dark cloud above the head, be the sunshine your colleagues need. Be receptive to feedback and truly work on improvements. Lifelong learners are humble and know that it is important to strive for excellence.

For Marc Accetta, an employee who knows how to be a professional is a keeper. More than just showing up, professionalism requires one to be effective and efficient in their responsibilities. An excellent employee is a person with initiative. Going the extra mile means working smart, producing results, and staying true to the company’s values even beyond office hours. Employers seek to work with excellent employees and are right to do so. Such employees cultivate positive workplace culture and bring in favorable results.

Reset: The Importance Of Taking Time Off From Work

Gone are the days when people look forward to having relaxing, week-long vacations. The working class masses of today are scared of taking office leaves because they’re scared of the amount of work they will be dealing with when they return from their trip.

While there are companies that force their employees to finish tasks even during the most important holidays, there are organizations that encourage their workers to take a few days off. Here’s why the workaholic needs some time off from all the stressful paperwork.

It improves one’s physical health.
The stress that workers feel while in the office can greatly affect their health. Disconnecting from the world of work through a relaxing getaway will reduce their risk of having heart diseases or worse, heart attacks.

It helps rekindle or build relationships.
Because people only have work and deadlines on their minds, they miss out on the important things. They replace meeting family members and friends with pursuing the advancement of their career. While productivity through working is important for one’s personal growth, people must also spend time with those who matter the most. After all, relationships are more important than receiving a fat pay check.

It establishes work-life balance.
People who take time off find themselves outside the workforce. Their identities are much more established, and they are a whole person even without their respective careers. Moreover, those who take regular vacations are more focused workers. Getting time off makes a person more creative and productive in the workplace.

Note: Failure is Not the Same As Lack of Success

“No risk, no reward” — old adage.

Those who really want to succeed must be willing to fail. The highest peaks are best appreciated from the deepest valleys.

Majority of today’s (and of the past’s) successful people have at some point in their lives hit rock bottom. However, they never succumbed to failure and instead used it as an inspiration to start anew and finally succeed. Henry Ford went bankrupt five times before his car company became a global brand. Akio Morita’s earliest inventions were epic fails before Sony became a leader in cutting-edge electronic goods. Walt Disney was criticized for his “lack imagination and poor ideas” before his company took off as one of the largest entertainment conglomerates in the world.

Unsuccessful people do not go outside their box and settle for the familiar. They hesitate to offer new ideas because they function from a place of fear. They are afraid to fail because they are overly anxious of the judgment of others, causing them to do only the minimum and play it safe.

Successful people go for their ambitious ideas with an awareness and willingness to fail. Of course, they do not want to disappoint, but they know that if they do not take risks, they will never know what it actually is to win.

Celebrating self-improvement month with a focus on boosting job performance

September is self-improvement month and there’s no better time to review just how much one has accomplished since the beginning of the year. People often make New Year’s resolutions but it is common for many to fall short or lose steam along the way. With a few months to go till the year ends, instead of giving up entirely, it is better to adopt a stance that insists that there is still some time to complete some of the goals set in January.

With little time to spare, it is best to focus on some aspects in life that matter. One’s job career is a good aspect to focus on as people spend much of their life at work. As some of these suggestions will show, a little can go a long way in improving one’s job performance:

First, make it a point to always arrive early. Resisting the urge to hit the snooze button every morning pays off as getting to work earlier than others gives workers some quiet, interruption-free time to start their day right.

Second is to let go of the urge to multitask. By focusing on one task at a time, people can do better work, accomplish more, and feel less stressed at the end of the day after they’ve struck off everything in their daily to-do list.

Third, improve on communication. Many hassles and misunderstandings at the workplace can easily be avoided by listening and asking the right questions. Focus on improving communication with others and help improve the team’s synergy to get more things done right.

Finally, remember to find balance. Work is not everything there is to life so learning to limit one’s daily workload is vital to avoid burning out.

Getting one's work recognized

Putting it simply: working hard and working smart are still the best things that professionals can do to get ahead in their career. It takes an extraordinary amount of effort and an abundant display of perseverance and dedication to one’s work to get noticed by the higher-ups and to be considered as a potential candidate for a leadership role. However, in spite of one’s efforts, there are still times when hard work somehow falls short.

For professionals who find that this situation applies to them, here are some tips on how they can get the recognition they deserve:

How to Recognize Employees for a Job Well Done

1. Improve further. If a professional’s hard work and great attitude is not getting recognized within the organization, it may be because the level of his or her work is still only within expected or recommended levels. To break through, a worker may need to show more initiative to take on bigger responsibilities and to show willingness to learn other tasks.

2. Assess the organization’s values. An employee’s achievements at work may not be in line with the goals of the organization, and this could be why that worker hasn’t been recognized. Reviewing the organization’s values should reveal what types of achievements are valued by the managers which could help guide workers to devote more of their effort to tasks that matter.

3. Move to a different company. Finally, it may be that the organization simply does not value extraordinary employees. There are many dead end jobs in companies that don’t value innovation and initiative. If this is the case, then it is best for a highly motivated individual to just look for better opportunities in a company that doesn’t fault them for being enthusiastic about work.

Five simple daily habits for a happy life in the office

In today’s busy world, work, deadlines, and a demanding boss can overwhelm employees. While committing errors is inevitable and can even serve as a lesson, fewer errors mean more chances of success in one’s professional life. Embracing best practice and adopting the following expert advice from certified life and career coach Ann Mehl can result to more ‘happy days’ in the workplace.

• Improving physical health. A sluggish body leads to a laid-back attitude towards work. Mehl suggests taking the stairs instead of riding the elevator, or taking a 20-minute walk during breaks.

• Spending emotional energy on important things. Discernment works when individuals spend their emotions on important things, rather than on trivial matters. Workers must surround themselves with positive energy by developing close ties with people who can inspire and uplift them.

• Exercising the mind. People can learn new things every day by recalling facts, sorting information, and engaging in mental games. By engaging in mental activities, an individual is able to maintain a sharp mind.

• Getting in touch with a ‘higher force.’ Connecting with something bigger and higher puts things in perspective. It doesn’t have to be about meditating for hours or even believing in a god. It can be done by being one with nature or just being grateful.

• Reaching out to others. An old adage says that no man is an island. People need people. Whether they are close relatives or long lost friends, people are a reminder of the realities in life.

With these pieces of advice in mind, no challenge is too big for the employee who wants to have a happy life in the office.

Finding equilibrium amidst chaotic life and work

Finding an equal balance between life and work is still one of the biggest challenges faced by many employees and executives today. Driven by the hunger for an impressive career and the need to provide well for the family, many working individuals often find themselves caught in the turbulent toss-up between life and work.

While work-life balance can easily mean equal number of hours for work and personal life, it is more than meets the eye. Work-life balance means daily achievement and enjoyment, ideas that are deceptive in their simplicity.

Achievement and enjoyment are the back and front of a coin. One cannot have one without the other. Living a one-sided life is why so many “successful” people are not happy or are not nearly as happy as they should be. To get the elusive work-life balance one has to value family. Career people are guilty of stealing time from their personal life. It is important to remember that family is the one facing all the risks, stresses, and financial swings of the business. If time for work and personal life are balanced, satisfaction in all other life aspects can be achieved.

One can’t simply have it all. Career people are often too caught up in chasing the latest empty seat in the workplace, exhausting themselves until the desired position is achieved. However, most who have climbed the pedestal are too tired to enjoy their newfound glory or are too unprepared for the responsibilities.

While work-life balance is an ongoing challenge, the most important thing to bear in mind is to have achievement and enjoyment in the four quadrants of life – work, family, friends, and self. The absence of one could jeopardize everything. No amount of definition can tow the line on work-life balance. In the end, it is up to the individual to define what brings him or her sense of achievement and enjoyment.
