Here Are Reasons Why Tenacity Matters

Tenacity is often considered the secret sauce in business and life. It’s defined as the determination to continue what one is doing – having the courage or resolution, the mental or moral strength, to continue to exist or persist despite opposition, hardship or danger. There are several reasons why tenacity is a very important trait to have whether in one’s career or in personal affairs.

It puts things in a good perspective
Tenacity provides perspective to place short-term difficulties in the context of a greater goal or purpose. It commits to look beyond an obstacle and instead consider it an opportunity for improvement or growth. It offers the confidence as well as determination to find a way to seek out a solution and survive.

It sheds light on one’s strengths

A position of tenacity and flexibility enables one to unveil those undiscovered strengths and abilities that ultimately lead to success. It’s a peek into what one is actually capable of doing and achieving amid an unfortunate situation.

It encourages other people

Tenacity is a display of courage and persistence, which can inspire others to take the same bold path. This can help prevent a culture of quitting in the face of adversity. Rather, it promotes a movement of hurdling the odds, may it be in large organizations or in the small startup environment.

Moving beyond unrealistic notions of leadership

Many things have been said about leadership. In taking note of the qualities of effective leaders and the skills leadership positions entail, people should be empowered to take on leadership roles and advance in their career. However, the opposite occurs as many people find the task too intimidating. They also judge themselves harshly based on unrealistic notions.

Often, these misconceptions about leadership involve thoughts about position, charisma, and genius. This shouldn’t be the case and people should move beyond thinking that they don’t have seniority, good ideas, or charisma to take charge and lead others to achieve more.

While many leaders who receive the most attention are undeniably the charismatic ones, charisma is not necessarily a prerequisite to becoming a leader. A leadership role requires more than great communication skills and a person’s other skills may still make them a prime candidate for a leadership role to take on the task on hand.

Likewise, leadership is not solely banked on innovation and out-of-the box thinking. Sometimes, it is about deciding on actions with the least risk, the simple solution that others have overlooked, and the safest way to achieve the company’s goals.

Finally, seniority in a company is not a proper indication of leadership skills. Workers can demonstrate their willingness and drive to take on leadership roles even from the bottom of the organizational chart. Eventually, someone from the top may recognize their work and effort and give them the position that they deserve.

Getting one's work recognized

Putting it simply: working hard and working smart are still the best things that professionals can do to get ahead in their career. It takes an extraordinary amount of effort and an abundant display of perseverance and dedication to one’s work to get noticed by the higher-ups and to be considered as a potential candidate for a leadership role. However, in spite of one’s efforts, there are still times when hard work somehow falls short.

For professionals who find that this situation applies to them, here are some tips on how they can get the recognition they deserve:

How to Recognize Employees for a Job Well Done

1. Improve further. If a professional’s hard work and great attitude is not getting recognized within the organization, it may be because the level of his or her work is still only within expected or recommended levels. To break through, a worker may need to show more initiative to take on bigger responsibilities and to show willingness to learn other tasks.

2. Assess the organization’s values. An employee’s achievements at work may not be in line with the goals of the organization, and this could be why that worker hasn’t been recognized. Reviewing the organization’s values should reveal what types of achievements are valued by the managers which could help guide workers to devote more of their effort to tasks that matter.

3. Move to a different company. Finally, it may be that the organization simply does not value extraordinary employees. There are many dead end jobs in companies that don’t value innovation and initiative. If this is the case, then it is best for a highly motivated individual to just look for better opportunities in a company that doesn’t fault them for being enthusiastic about work.
